Technical Communications Corporation

receives USG FIPS 140-1 Level 3 certification for its

CX 7200 Internet Protocol Network Encryptor.

CONCORD, MA, September 18, 2000 - Technical Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: TCCO), a leader in securing mission-critical communication networks, today announced that it has received Federal Information Processing Standard 140-1 (FIPS 140-1) Level 3 certification for its CX 7200 Internet Protocol (IP) Network Encryptor. Award of this certification allows TCC to effectively compete for US and Canadian federal security requirements, which require FIPS 140-1 compliance. The CX 7200 is the latest in TCC’s line of commercial network security products.

The CX 7200 Triple DES IP Network Encryptor is part of TCC’s CipherONE™ family of products aimed at the worldwide, high-performance communications security market. Compliance with FIPS 140-1 has become a best business practice for banking security products and FIPS 140-1 validation is further required by US and Canadian governments for federal acquisitions. The standard defines US government security requirements for any device offering encryption capabilities and specifies eleven sections of security requirements, varying across four increasing levels of security, that an encryptor must meet in order to receive certification. Certification to the USG standard also supports TCC’s international markets, which often turn to the US standards, as benchmarks of quality.

They provided compliance assessments, validation test planning, documentation preparation, coordination of the laboratory testing and interface with the applicable government agencies.

TCC, a leader in securing highly sensitive military and government networks, has combined high quality, strong encryption technology with ease-of-use system management to create IP based VPNs that protect the growing number of commercial, financial and corporate WAN applications requiring a high level of security.

The Cipher X 7200 Encryptor, supported by TCC’s KEYNET network security management system, offers centrally managed end-to-end security that can seamlessly integrate into Internet Protocol (IP) Wide Area Networks (WANS) and Local Area Networks (LANs) providing secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions. The Cipher X 7200 supports Triple DES or customized algorithms, authentication, firewall and secure community keying capabilities to enable flexible, transparent end-to-end network security. The Cipher X 7200 has been engineered to provide high level protection for mission critical data or voice communications for the banking, financial, pharmaceutical and health industry and for government departments or agencies.

Bernard Woesten, TCC’s Director of Marketing stated, "With this certification, TCC has received validation of the high security design features that are now available in our commercial encryption products. With our CipherONE family of encryption products, which includes our KEYNET Network Security Management system and our Cipher X 7100 Triple-DES Frame Relay Encryptor, customers benefit from optimized network encryption system performance at a significantly reduced cost.
